This Power BI report visualizes selected macroeconomic data from the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) World Economic Outlook, published in April 2025. Explore key indicators such as national accounts, inflation, unemployment rates, balance of payments, fiscal metrics, and trade data across various countries.
The report is designed for simplicity, it’s a two-page layout with intuitive navigation. Page1: Select an indicator and two or more countries to benchmark. Toggle between a Line Chart (to track trends over the past 20 years) or a Matrix (to focus on a specific year). Click the ‘i’ icon in the top-right corner of the chart to view a description of the selected indicator. Page2: select a single country to view all indicators over time.
Technical Details
The source data, a large flat .txt file, was imported and transformed using Power Query. Normalized into a classic Star Schema for optimal performance, with separate dimensions for ‘Countries’, ‘Indicators’, and ‘Dates’, alongside a narrow, unpivoted Fact table. Additional country details and flags were sourced from a separate Semantic Model via a Direct Query connection.
Other techniques used in the report include Bookmarking & Buttons to seamlessly switch between views, Calendar Table to enable Previous Year and delta calculations and Merging the ‘Country’ table with web geonames and flags for more insights. Standard visuals are used to ensure compatibility and clarity.
